My interest in journalism began when I developed a passion for English novelistic writing. As a former college student majoring in English literature, I was extensively exposed to British literary works, which inspired my interest towards creative writing.

I have a knack for expressing my personal views about the novels that I read through writing book reviews, and I also regularly write about the travel destinations I’ve visited around the world. While I enjoy the process of writing and expressing myself through words, poems and short stories, I never thought about how I could make a stable income from journalism as a freelancer.

I felt I needed a qualification that could equip me with the necessary skills for journalistic writing. That’s when I found The British College of Journalism’s Professional Freelance Journalism Course, which provides insightful knowledge about how to have my work accepted by other magazines, newspapers and websites.

What makes this course impressive is the resourceful and informative teaching materials, along with the valuable guidance from mentors. The content covers a wide range of topics, including effective writing, interviewing skills, editing, approaching editors, pitching stories and seeking payment for your pieces. The practical tips shared in each tutorial helped me grasp the strategies and techniques of how to pitch meaningful ideas that are marketable and appealing to editors. The valuable feedback and insightful advice given by my tutor help me to shed light on brainstorming stories and ideas that are in alignment with the field that I have been mostly familiar with, such as women’s struggles, cross-culture-themed stories, travelling experiences and book reviews.

I even had an article successfully published in the Singapore newspaper The Strait Times, which motivated me further and has given me the confidence to reach out to high-profile magazines in the future. I believe I can capitalise on my strength as a bilingual writer, tapping into trans-cultural issues, which will gain more momentum in an increasingly globalised world.

Thanks to what I’ve learned in this course, I now have the confidence to approach different types of publications and my skills as a journalist have improved. What’s more, The British College of Journalism provided me with the essential tools, know-how, and confidence to navigate a media-driven path while also encouraging me to create ideas that would resonate with a diverse range of publications and their audiences. I would definitively recommend this course to those who want to pursue their dreams in the journalism field.
