I had always enjoyed writing, but I was unsure how I could make a stable income from it as a freelancer. Before working as a freelance journalist, I worked as an editor at a magazine. I occasionally wrote articles for the publication, but I wanted to branch out, cover more topics and have my work accepted by other magazines, newspapers and websites. Curiosity fuelled my desire to work as a journalist because you can interview people you usually wouldn’t get a chance to talk to and tell stories that deserve to be told.
My tutor provided me with invaluable advice and industry insights. Learning to pitch meaningful ideas concisely made my writing more marketable and appealing to editors. The knowledge I gained from this course helped me to get articles accepted by national newspapers such as The Guardian and Times of Malta, which made me believe in myself and my work.
The course material covered a number of niche topics which made me realise that it is important to think outside the box to find fresh angles and new stories. I also particularly enjoyed reading the comments from industry professionals throughout the tutorials. I remember googling their names and thinking, “These are real people. Writing for a living is possible. It is not a pipe dream.”
The course was great value for money, and the resources provided continue to help me in my journalistic career. I was also grateful for the flexibility the course gave me because I was able to fit the assignments around my full-time job.
For me, this course wasn’t about just getting a new qualification; it was about writing for a living and changing my life. The journey has only just begun, but it is one of the most rewarding decisions I have ever made. The Professional Freelance Journalism Course gave me the confidence to start my career in freelance journalism. The in-depth educational material equipped me with the skills I needed to get published. These skills I acquired from this course were also valuable life lessons: You learn to deal with rejection and persevere until your goals become a reality.
In short, I would recommend this course to anyone who has ever dreamed of making a living from writing. The tutorials detail both the positive and negative sides of the industry, which will help you make an informed judgement on whether a career in freelance journalism is for you. Whether you want to improve your writing skills, gain confidence when pitching or understand the mechanics of the industry, this course has something for you.
It is a comprehensive guide that is broken down into bite-size, manageable chunks that make the task ahead seem doable rather than overwhelming. I am glad that I decided to do this course. It exceeded my expectations and made me demand more from myself and my writing. There are challenges out there that are worth taking.
