I love sharing my opinion whether it is over a game of football or a place of interest to visit. My friends and family often said I should express my views on a public platform and hence become a journalist. My current full time job as a Sports Trading Analyst involves writing analytical reports for high level clients. As such I wanted to diversify the scope of my writing skills and I began my search on finding ways to achieve this. And bingo, I came across The Professional Freelance Journalism Course offered by the British College of Journalism.
Suffice to say that I was sold on the course after learning two key aspects: it was self-paced through distance learning and it was conducted by leading experts in the journalism industry.
Once I enrolled, it was clear to see that the material was structured in a methodical way that enabled me to grasp the fundamentals of journalism very quickly. My tutor was quick to point out that a key criteria of ‘easy on the eye’ journalism is sentences of no more than 30 words. Furthermore she stressed the importance of interviewing sources relevant to the topic, and always addressing editors by their name – rather than the blasé approach of ‘To whom it may concern’.
The communication with the college staff was excellent. Whenever I submitted an assignment it was promptly acknowledged and feedback was often provided within just 48 hours. Their prime aim is to ensure you acquire the skills to get published and they help you every step of the way to achieving this goal.
I am delighted to say that I am now a regular feature writer for travel company Travioor. Obtaining the BCJ qualification was pivotal in acquiring this position as it increased my flair for words and improved my content structure. I have now reached a status where they ask me first if I would be interested in doing a write-up on a destination of my choice.
Receiving recognition for the travel features that I have produced has enabled me to increase my writing viewership. Furthermore, it is highly satisfying to show my friends and family the articles that I have had published. Treasuring such joyous occasions stems from learning the plethora of writing skills the BCJ course offers which has in turn, allowed me to explore the limitless opportunities in journalism.
One of the nicest touches on completing the course is the photographic media pass that is issued, recognising and symbolising that you are now a fully-fledged freelance journalist.
