Who to Pitch to: Finding the Right Person for Your Article

Pitching is key when you want to be a published journalist. In fact, several assignments in our course involve writing pitches.

No matter how good your pitch is, you need to make sure it lands in the right person’s inbox. So, who do you pitch to?

If it’s a big title, the best person is usually the features editor, commissioning editor or the relevant section editor. A section editor is someone like a travel, beauty or health editor in charge of a particular section.

If you’re lucky, their name will be in the publication, and a quick search should reveal the email format for that company, e.g. [email protected].

If not, Google is again your friend. For instance, you could look up “commissioning editor at (title)” and see what it throws up. LinkedIn can be useful for this too. You could even ring the publication if you can find an editorial number and ask.

A big No-No is to send it to “readers’ letters”. This is aimed at readers who want their letters published rather than journalists offering features; they will likely consider you’re happy to have your work published for free or just discard your contact.
