Picnic Baskets and the Power of Freedom: A Freelancer's Tale

Being a freelance journalist isn’t just about pitching and writing – it’s also about freedom and work/ life balance. Judy Yorke, our senior tutor, shares a perfect example of that here.

In a couple of hours’ time, I am going to grab my swimming costume, my suncream, a book, a towel and a picnic and head off to the lido.

If you are in the UK, you will understand the excitement of a rare heatwave. If you’re not, well, please take it from me that us Brits get terribly over-excited once the mercury goes over 25 degrees. And as I’m freelance, I can make the most of it.

Do I feel guilty? Absolutely not. I booked the swimming on Monday, so I’ve put in a few extra hours this week. I’ll also catch up a bit at the weekend (we’re promised rain on Sunday).

The ability to set my own hours (deadlines permitting) is a continuing joy, even after 15 years of freelancing. It’s why I can’t ever see myself going back to a job with set hours.

Even better…I am just finishing off a feature about picnic baskets, so it’s the perfect time to take one with me to test out.

Freelancing allows you to make the most of the sunshine and gives you purpose and distraction to buckle down when you’re stuck inside with the winter blues!
