How to Boost Your Income as a Freelance Journalist: Diversify Your Skills

Our course gives you the skills you need to become a successful freelance journalist – but those skills can be used in other ways too.

It’s a really wise idea to develop a career with different income streams, so if you have a quiet week (and everyone does sometimes), you can look for other types of work.

Some of the work freelance journalists take on to boost their income includes

  • Content writing
  • Copywriting
  • Ghostwriting
  • Social media management
  • Newsletters
  • PR

Just a word of warning, if you want to do some PR – you must keep PR and journalism clients separate.

If, for example, you write a press release about an amazing new health product, it’s fine to pitch it to a publication. But you would need to do that as a PR and the goal is to get publicity, not payment.

What you can’t then do is offer it as a journalist and expect to receive a fee. It’s unethical and as you will be trying to please two people at once (the client and the editor), it could get very messy.
