If you want to write about running, for example, reading magazines in that field will help you get a sense of what publications there are in that market. You will start to understand what kind of features they are looking for, how long their articles are and what the writing style is.
It’s also worth picking up some general interest magazines because they may well be interested in your ideas, too.
Reading dozens of magazines, however, can get expensive. One way around this is to go to the library and see which titles they have there. Even better, find out whether you can borrow them online from your library. For example, we know of a local library with an app called Libby, giving free access to loads of magazines which you can read on an iPad.
Kindle Unlimited includes magazines as well as books so this can be very useful.
There is also a website/ app called Readly which lets you read thousands of titles. Both Kindle Unlimited and Readly offer free trials before you need to pay. Readly is currently £9.99 a month. (We’ve mentioned Readly before, so you can probably tell we’re big fans)!
Both of these options have rolling monthly subscriptions, so we recommend you use them for a month or two, dip out and then sign up for another month later on and binge if you don’t want to sustain the ongoing subscription fee!
