Harness Your Enthusiasm: Turn Your Interest into Your Niche

You don’t need to have a niche – but it helps. It’s especially good when you can get paid for something you love as well!

If you are enthusiastic about something, like running, UFOs, or dogs, there are magazines for people like you (and almost every other interest out there). The same applies if you are at a new stage in life e.g. planning a wedding, having a baby or retiring.

As a freelance journalist, look out for specialist magazines in areas you are interested in. You’ve already got a big advantage as you should be aware of the trends and issues, which will always make it easier to come up with ideas. When you get to interview people, you might well know who to ask straight away and will most likely also know what to ask.

If you’re already reading magazines for your areas of interest, then all the better, as you will be familiar with their style and, most importantly, what they are looking for.

Have a look at the regular slots in these titles. Do you have an idea that could work for that section?

Writing about something you love can be really enjoyable – and you get paid for it too!
