- Mix up the length of your sentences. Have some short ones (six-eight words), some longer ones (up to about 25) and some in their teens! When all your sentences are the same length, your copy can become really tedious.
- Make sure you don’t keep using the same word. If you find yourself repeating something, use a different term. Sometimes you might have to rewrite the sentence to avoid this.
- Don’t start every sentence in the same way.
- Further to point 3, avoid beginning every paragraph with the same phrase – e.g. “there is”. Read your copy carefully to make sure this isn’t happening.
- Write in the active voice rather than the passive. For example, “The dog bit me” rather than “I was bitten by the dog”. It’s punchier and less flabby.
