“I couldn’t help feeling smug when my first article appeared in print with my name next to it.”
Before I took the online Professional Freelance Journalism Course with the British College of Journalism, I had thought that writing was easy enough for anyone to do. I still think so, only now I know good writing from just any writing and it makes such a difference!
The course is very well structured and the material is presented in a logical and entertaining way. I enjoyed cutting out the little ‘Journo Comments’ and ‘Writing Tips’ provided throughout by working industry professionals, and sticking them into a note pad. I now refer to this as my ‘Journo Bible’ and I find it really useful when I’m working on an article.
The course has helped me identify the areas of journalism I am less likely to do well in so I can focus my efforts to where I will have success. I have discovered that I am better at writing travel and ‘roundup’ pieces compared to long features and ‘how-to’s’. The wide variety of writing styles and formats was an eye-opener in themselves.
Having a personal tutor to help you along is another benefit. I learned a lot form the feedback provided by my tutor and I even asked for her opinion on a few pieces I had in the works for a magazine called, The Russian Mind. My tutor was happy to provide further feedback and I have been writing for this publication ever since.
I couldn’t help feeling smug when my first article appeared in print with my name next to it. It was really something to show to my family back in Russia and all my teachers and lecturers in England from my university days who always believed I was a bright student with some writing potential.
My latest piece was a celebrity interview with a well-known Russian footballer and I had the piece ready just in time for the opening of the Euro Championship. Employing the course terminology, I used the championship as a news hook and wrote a feature on my favourite athlete. It was all very exciting.
Whether you are a beginning freelancer, a seasoned journalist, or you just want to improve your general writing skills, you will find this course gives you exactly that and more. It’s affordable too.
Freelancing is only a hobby at the moment but it is nice to be paid for doing what you love to do. The benefits of The Professional Freelance Journalism Course cannot be underestimated.
